I'm the Editor-in-Chief of Southern Writers Magazine. A national magazine showcasing and interviewing authors and their books while giving readers a behind the scenes look at their favorite authors and introducing new authors.
The Story of Southern Writers Magazine
In order to tell you about the beginnings of the magazine I have to tell you first about me. Retiring in 2010, I formed a writing group. I wanted to get back into writing, which is my passion as is helping others. So I talked to a friend of mine, Doyne Phillips, a friend who also likes to write , thus began Collierville Christian Writers Group. I thought maybe six or seven people might come, never dreamed twenty-three would show up. The writing group is still going strong, you may know us as CCWriters Group. So far our writers group has published 7 books consisting of anthology books and a prayer book.
I was enjoying my time with the writers group, working on writing short stories, began writing a novel and trying to get use to being retired. As is often the case, God had something more for me to do. I had been feeling for a while God wanted me to do something, in other words, I felt the tug in my heart, but wasn't sure what He wanted. I want to mention here, a very dear friend, who went home to be with the Lord last year, who was also one of my pastors, prayed with me and for me during this period of time. We all miss him. Thank you Earl for your encouragement, prayers and support. After much prayer, I finally was ready and said to God, "I will do whatever you want me to– go wherever you want me to go." Which took a lot of courage, since I had no idea what he might want me to do. It was one of those moments, you know in your heart, you are surrendering your will and your life is about to change. That was January 2011. I met with my partner from the writing group, Doyne Phillips, and shared what I believed God was calling me to do. I just sat down at the table and said, "I feel we need to do a magazine to help authors promote their books." He said, "Let's do it." Then I talked to another friend, Gary Fearon and old him what Doyne and I were going to do, and he wanted to be a part of it. During the next two months God lined up everything needed to begin a magazine. March 2011 there was no doubt this was God's call, the commitment was made. On July 1, 2011 the magazine went live Online and in Print with our first publication, it's first issue. God opened every door, brought the people who were to work with us , brought the authors, and lined up every vendor. It was amazing to watch as things unfolded. All of this took place in three months. That's when you know beyond doubt the plan is God's. We will celebrate our Sixth Anniversary, this July, 2017 and to date we have promoted over 1400 authors. Our sole mission is to promote and highlight authors and their books; introduce readers to authors who write good words. Every decision we make hinges on on one question: "Will it help promote the author's, their books and be pleasing to our readers?" We created Suite T, a blog for authors to come together in a community and share their writing from techniques to promoting in order to help each other. As of today, we have over 3.100,000 viewers and it continue to grow. We have Southern Writers Online Bookstore which promotes the authors books who have been in the magazine. And now, we have added The Gallery of Stars where we promote authors. As you can see we truly do promote authors and their books. Our mission from day one has been to get good words out into the world. Visit our website, www.southernwritersmagazine.com. You will find us in print, online and digital.
